We Pennsylvania's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Reading rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Reading pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
- Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
- Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
- Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
- When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires
Reading Rodent Removal Tip:
Where do rats live during the summer?
Rats are warm-blooded animals. The body temperature of the critters varies with their environmental temperature. Since the environmental temperature influences the body temperature which in turn influences general activity, the activity of rats varies according to the season. In this article, we focus on how summer changes the activity of rats and where they live.
It is common knowledge that rats move indoors during cold periods. Fall and winter force the critters to seek warmth since their body temperature drops. Homes and other properties are specifically susceptible to rat infestations during the winter. But what happens during the summer?
During summer, the environmental temperature becomes higher. As a result, rats do not necessarily need the warmth that forced them to seek shelter indoors. This means that they can choose to leave the areas they infest for new environments. However, this is not always the case.
Rats infest properties for different reasons. They seek shelter as well as food and water. During winter, the need for shelter is heightened. During summer, the need for warmth is reduced, but the critters still need food and water.
Human environments provide an excellent combination of food, water, and shelter. So, even in summer, when they are not deliberately seeking shelter, they still need food and water, which they can find in homes. Thus, homes and other properties still make great homes for rats during summer. Rats can live in homes during the summer. In fact, rat removal experts have stated that rat infestations could even become higher during summer. The smell of built-up organic matter could attract the critters to the area.
They will particularly find homes appealing because of the abundance of food and water and ease of access. Why should they try to brave the treacherous outdoors when they can live in a haven?
We should mention that, although the critters will not move out in summer, resident critters may shift base to cooler areas. In homes, such areas include kitchens and pantries, which also give them good access to a lot of food. We should also mention that rats are very active during the summer. This is when they fatten up and breed. They are fast breeders. The female could become pregnant just two days after producing a litter. This is an indication of the ability of the critters to maintain active infestations during summer.
During winter and colder periods, rats that did not find homes to infest may enter crevices and tunnels. As the temperatures become warmer and they leave their underground shelters, they then seek more comfortable sources of food and shelter. This is a contribution to the increased infestation of indoor environments during summer. This is also more evidence that rats live indoors during the summer.
Even when rats live indoors during summer, they may go in and out of the infested property for colder temperatures and sources of standing water.
Signs of infestation
Having established that rats can live indoors and outdoors during summer, let's now highlight the signs of an infestation.
Noise
Rats are noisy, especially during the night when their activity increases. Noises that give away rat infestations include cackling, scratching, and biting noises.
Feces
Feces, which look like small pieces of grain, are an indication of the presence of rats. You will find the feces in hidden and secluded areas like corners of walls.
Scratch and bite marks
Scratch marks on furniture in areas that rats frequent are indications of the presence of the critters.
Rats live indoors and outdoors during summer. All efforts to keep the critters away should be maintained during the summer.
